Radon Testing
Radon exists on long island. Yes, it’s true that it occurs here less than in other locations such as west or north of New York City, but do not make the mistake of assuming you don’t have radon because of low occurrence rates. The truth about radon is that it can kill.
Radon is a radioactive gas given off by the decay of uranium found in bedrock. This gas escapes from the ground but can get trapped in buildings in higher concentrations causing cancer and illnesses. According to the EPA radon is often the single largest contributor to an individual’s background radiation dose.
Long island is made of layers of sand rather than bedrock but large quantities of rocks and boulders can exist in pockets in the sand emitting radon in a very localized manner. This is why the occurrence rate is low but some areas still test positive.
Asbestos
In the era of do-it-yourself home renovations, many homeowners are knocking down ceilings and walls, and tearing out floor tiles and old pipes. But in their efforts to upgrade and beautify their older homes, they might unknowingly be contaminating the air they breathe with toxic asbestos fibers.
Buildings and homes built before the 1980’s could expose homeowners, their families and others to asbestos possibly hiding in cement, floor tiles, insulation, walls and pipe. Asbestos is a naturally-occurring fibrous silicate set of minerals found in every part of the world. For decades, it was used during the construction of residential homes because of its durability, ability to resist fire and high temperatures, and excellent insulation properties.
However, these positive traits are outweighed by the health hazards associated with asbestos exposure, including the risk of life-threatening diseases such as malignant Mesothelioma and Asbestosis. Although homes built after the mid 1980’s likely do not contain asbestos, millions of homes built prior are filled with asbestos in attics, older appliances, walls, ceiling, roofing, and more.
Our Asbestos inspections can help you figure out if you have any potential asbestos containing materials in your home or building and how best to handle those materials.
